The Community Response Team training programme for District Emergency Organisations (DEO) officially commenced on Saturday at the Princess Margaret Secondary school, St. Philip with the three DEOs based in the parish. The pilot programme is designed to provide DEO members with the basics skills that they will need to respond to their community's immediate needs in the aftermath of a disaster when the emergency services are not immediately available.
Twenty-four participants, will in the coming months be exposed to elements of disaster preparedness, fire safety and suppression, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, incident command and emergency communications. Participants are expected to complete all seven modules of the programme. At the end of the Community Response Team training programme, a simulation exercise involving the participants will be conducted.
During the exercise instructors will assess the effectiveness of the course content and the ability of participants to operate under simulated emergency conditions. The Community Response Team training course is expected to be extended to the other DEOs after the pilot programme is completed in early August.
