An appeal is going out for damage assessment officers. Head of the Barbados Statistical Service, Angela Hunte, said there were still some areas of the island to be covered, especially in St. Michael and Christ Church.

She is asking all interested people to get in touch with the department, which is based in the old National Insurance Building, Fairchild Street, The City at telephone numbers 427-7396 or 427-6009.

While I endorse an appeal for persons to become Damage Assessment Officers, those of us who are members of District Emergency Oganisation and other disater response groups should first give some thought to the fact that it is expected that in the aftermath of a major disaster, you'll be required be in the field collecting data on the extent of damage for submission to the stastical department within the first 48hrs.



I say that to say this! If you already have a specific function to perform, maybe in the line of communications, shelter, road clearance, etc., (with the exception of the DA Committee) it is expected that you will function in that capacity by your organisation. In the likelihood that you are also trained as a DA Officer, it is expected too that you will be in the field functioning in that capacity. Therefore, there is a challenge and the question is,what will be your preference? In my DEO there are persons who have had the training in DA but are in committees such as sheltering and feeding.



I've been trained as a DA Officer and I've spotted this since I'm involved in another oraganisation which has a specific role to perform in the aftermath of, lets say a hurricane. And, I've communicated this to the stastical dept.



Suggestion to the Stats. Dept.: Maybe an appeal through the BGIS for DA Officers can be made to the public at large, so as to engage the services of those persons who are not part of any DEO or any other organisation which already has a committment to disaster response. The idea would be to create a distinctive DA team.
